A brand new series of events celebrating short horror cinema have been launched in Leicester.
Short Sharp Shocks! is an irregular film night curated & hosted by Estelle Phillips and filmmaker Bob Hartshorn that takes place in the upstairs theatre of a venue named The Western located in Leicester UK.
The evening is dedicated to showing the very best in horror shorts cinema featuring exclusives from local filmmakers and films from the rest of the UK and beyond. Selected screenings are followed by an audience Q&A with invited directors shedding light on their creative process. In addition, there is a lot of fun to be had with the film themed, oversized props providing endless amusement and photo opportunities for the guests.
The first show was on Wednesday 7th December 2022. The evening was broken up into three segments of sub-genres with Dolls (2016 – director Keith Allott) and Peter The Penguin (2021 – director Andrew Rutter) kicking things off nicely in our ‘Malevolent toys’ section. This was followed by All I Ever Wanted (2022 – director Josh Alexander) and Leopard Heels (2022 – director Chris Turner) representing ‘Uncanny Work Spaces’, with the night seen off in style by LVRS (2018 – director Emily Bennett) and ParasomniaX (2022 – directed by co-host Bob Hartshorn) under the banner of ‘Surreal Toxic Relationships’.
Such a success was the debut, that a second event at The Western has been cemented for Wednesday 24th May 2023.
Film titles will be kept secret and only unveiled on the night.
In addition, Short Sharp Shocks! have been invited to do a special show at this year’s Leicester Horror Con on Saturday 24th June. The latter event will be a mixtape of our first two shows with special guests and surprises.
