Infested Hearts review

There’s nothing more irritating than a bug infestation in your home. Whether it’s a nearby bee hive, or fruit flies feasting on a stray crumb somewhere under your fridge.

The initial premise of Michael Varrati’s latest short feels like it was borne out of the pandemic, with Ethan questioning life outside his own four walls.

Quickly he starts to see bugs everywhere, but partner Dean feels there is something more going on with him.

Are the bugs a metaphor for something else; perhaps the breakdown of their relationship?

Shot in black and white, this is an atmospheric effort from Varrati which really pulls on our two leads to drive the story rather than cheap jump scares. The reliable Ben Baur adds some gravitas to the role Ethan, as we see he may not be the person on the surface.

Infested Hearts is a raw portrayal of paranoia and sadness, which in post-pandemic times could feel quite relatable.
