I mean where do you start with Cocaine Bear?
Anyone who has seen the marketing will be glad to know that this film does not get ideas above its station; it’s a big dumb horror comedy.
While more schlocky affairs such as the Sharknado et al really overly lean into their absurdity, Cocaine Bear strangely has a few moments on OTT violence and genuine tension.
Elizabeth Banks makes full use of the 1985 setting, with some fantastic needle drops including a stand-out effort from Depeche Mode which conducts the best scene in the movie.
The plot sees tonnes of cocaine accidentally fall into a Tennessee forest where a bear gets a taste for the white stuff and chaos ensues.
The cast is in on the joke with some great camp performances, with Margo Martindale’s Park Ranger a highlight alongside the foul-mouthed Henry, played by Christian Convery.
Ray Liotta, in his final performance before his untimely passing fulfils the role of cartoon drug lord with glee. Let’s not kid ourselves here though, the star is the titular cocaine bear which causes varying degrees of carnage whenever it lumbers into the shot.
A sequel/universe is inevitable, the real question now is what’s next for Cocaine Bear?
Cocaine Bear is now showing in cinemas.
