Subspecies review

The output rate of Charles Band’s Full Moon Entertainment is genuinely something to behold.

They are well known for their Puppet Master films (15 and counting), but they also produced a long running low budget series starting in 1991 with Subspecies.

The entire series (barring the spin-off Vampire Journals) has now arrived on the Arrow streaming channel, so after a bit of deliberation, I decided to dive in.

Director Ted Nicolaou takes us to the heart of the vampire lore as three teenage girls visit Transylvania and become unknowing pawns in a battle between two vamp brothers.

Subspecies knows how absurd it is, but leans into the camp and has Anders Hove really going the extra mile as the villainous Radu.

At a brisk 83 minutes, it doesn’t really slow up and also features a fun cameo from The Tall Man himself, the late Angus Scrimm.

Subspecies is a perfect watch if you just want something easy to watch on a weekend.

Now do I bother with the sequels?

Subspecies is now streaming on Arrow.
