Reign of Chucky review

It may have felt like the writing duo of Dustin McNeill and Travis Mullins had hit their peak with the dual Halloween books Taking Shape and Taking Shape II.

Think again, friend.

Here the writer partners take on the unenviable task of collating the history of the Child’s Play franchise.

While they casually sidestep the 2019 remake and don’t make it to the television series, there is so much information to digest from the genesis of Batteries not Included (the original film’s title) to the conclusion of Cult Of Chucky, no fan will be left short changed.

McNeill and Mullins get the majority of the big hitters involved directly or through archival interviews and delve unbelievably deep into even lesser considered parts of the franchise; here’s looking at your Child’s Play and Seed of Chucky.

It wouldn’t be one of their books without exploring ideas that never saw the light of day, and the amount of research involved is exhaustive and thoroughly engrossing.

While they may sugarcoat parts of the Chucky series that may be considered rather forgettable, but this is fan service of the highest order.

If you’ve read their previous books on the Halloween and Phantasm series, you will find plenty to love here.

Reign of Chucky by Dustin McNeill and Travis Mullins is available now in all book formats.
