Video Shop Tales of Terror review

The makers of the schlocky fun slasher I Scream at the Beach, are back with a low-budget anthology which veers from the sinister to the ridiculously absurd.

Here we have six tales exploring different horror stories, all starting from a sleazy video rental store.

We begin with the twisted Egghead, which sees a man come in for surgery and get much more than he bargained for. This features some very creative kills and some superb practical effects, especially given the limitations budget-wise.

Director Michael Fausti gets in on the act with Vergessen, which pits a group of slave girls against their Nazi overlords. It taps into the Naziploitation, feels oddly refreshing, and not afraid to step outside the box and give us something quite unique.

Alexander Churchyard and Max Davenport are clearly fans of Evil Dead, given their tongue-in-cheek romp ‘Mary Whitehouse You’re A….’. This is quite possibly the most fun segment given its bat-shit-crazy concept which is wholly committed to. It’s absurd, it’s gory but it is highly entertaining.

The cast is loaded with indie horror mainstays such as Laurence Harvey, Charlie Bond and Dani Thompson, who pulls duty 7 times throughout the nearly 2-hour runtime.

That would be only qualm with Video Shop Tales of Terror, is its bloated runtime, but having said this the majority of the segment really worked for me.

Video Shop Tales of Terror had its world premiere at Horror On Sea Film Festival 2023.
