What is that old phrase ‘high school never ends’.
For Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes co-directed feature Sissy, this certainly applies just with a 2022 spin and some blood.
We follow the journey of Cecilia aka the titular Sissy who is brought right back to her high school days, after a chance encounter with former best friend Emma, and in turn her former bully Alex.
Cecilia is unexpectedly invited to Emma’s hen party at a secluded country home, not knowing that Alex is gonna be there.
This sets off a chain of events driven partially by PTSD by also by something deeper and darker.
You may initially question why Cecilia would so quickly go along with attending, given her past but this becomes more clear as we unravel the past and also in turn her current, fragile mental state.
While for the most part a dark comedy, once Sissy hits third gear it lands firmly in the gory slasher sub-category.
The comedy hits the mark, especially for those with a gallows sense of humour plus there is some incredible practical effects including one head-splitting kill which will have you wondering if you’ve just seen a snuff film, with how convincing it looks.
Aisha Dee is truly fantastic as Cecilia, someone who has turned their life around after a tough childhood and become a social media influencer with a penchant for mental health and wellbeing.
If you are after a clever, quirky and gory slasher Sissy is definitely one to add to your watch list.
Sissy is streaming now on Shudder.
