Ash and Bone review

Taking its themes from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Wrong Turn franchises, Ash and Bone is the latest feature from director Harley Wallen.

Right from the outset, we know we are in for carnage, as Wallen goes to the dark underbelly of a small rural American town.

We follow rebellious teen Cassie, who becomes embroiled in a potential urban legend of the McKinley family. Sadly, Cassie is quite an annoying character, who seems to be rebelling against her father, who has recently shacked up with a new wife.

It might be my age, but I found myself sympathising with Cassie’s father and his partner instead of her as she drags them into the carnage from the McKinley’s after snooping in their house.

Wallen borrows a few marches from Texas Chainsaw with some of the plot tropes but does have one great villain up his sleeve with Jimmy Doom’s Clete McKinley, who is quite the deplorable monster. His sister May is not much better, and even indulges in rape alongside murder.

Ash And Bone is clearly made on a limited budget, and does make the most of its overly familiar plot. Its certainly worth a one-time watch for those after a grisly backwoods horror.

Ash and Bone is available to watch now on Amazon Prime.
