It was recently announced that Marcel Walz’s La Petite Mort from Unearthed Films, and we got a chance to chat with the director about the film.
How excited are you about the release of La Petite Mort?
To be honest, I’m super excited about this release! I mean, I made this movie 13 years ago and it was a super low-budget production, but we all had so much fun on set (and you will see that in the making of, which is a part of the special features) and the movie got an extensive fan base in Europe and kinda all over the world. I still get messages from Japan, Peru And so on. I also get weird ones from people asking me about torture stuff and what they wanna see in my next movie, which is kinda creepy, I bet yeah it is what it is. Now after all those years, unearthed is releasing this little indie film from Germany on blu ray and DVD and how can this not be exciting?
Given the film was released in 2009, do you feel this fits into the ‘torture porn’ boom brought on by Hostel and Saw?
Oh, 1000000%!
I mean come on, let’s face it! It is a low low-budget rip-off from HOSTEL! Maybe with more crazy gore but it is still a rip-off. I was super young and excited when someone asked me “hey Marcel, do you wanna do a hostel kinda thing?!” Well SURE!
After that movie I got the name “the German master of torture porn”, well I guess that’s something I can be proud of right?
hey, we got a sequel (which is even crazier) and believe it or not but those two movies are the reasons why I got the BLOOD FEAST Remake, so it looks like we did something right!
What lessons or techniques did you learn shooting La Petite Mort that you took forward into future work?
Oh definitely, the way I used colours and lights! That was the first movie where my “style” was kinda born and that’s something I still use in my new projects!
The best example is THATS A WRAP, PRETTY BOY and even BLIND. If you have a style, that’s something you won’t lose, that’s something that will grow from every step you go!
Where does the film rank within your portfolio to date?
Uh, that’s a tough question! This movie will always have a special spot in my heart, it was a different time back then making movies and for all, I got after it, this movie definitely set the stone for something! Is it the best movie in the world? Hell no, it’s a super low budget, super indie and at the end just a rip-off, but with a lot of heart and blood!
Why did you choose to work with Unearthed Films on the release?
Stephen reached out to the producer and he told me right after that unearthed is interested in LPM. I know Stephen now for so many years and I knew, this is the perfect home for a movie like this. He knows how to handle and market movies with a shit load of guts and gore and pure insanity!
You are currently in post-production on That’s A Wrap, what can you tell us about that?
Actually, it’s done and we had an amazing industry screening in Hollywood! I can’t really tell you anything about it, but it’s funny, gory very Mehta and we got a perfect response from the audience that night! That’s all I can say and the whole team is super excited about the release!
Order La Petite Mort from Unearthed Films.
