Gothic novels are extremely frequent, but Caitlin Starling is offering a fresh take with her latest novel The Death of Jane Lawrence.
While you may feel that the title makes the story redundant, think again.
Starling has created a rich and textured story, that like all great gothic horror has plenty of twists and turns.
We follow the titular Jane, who has arranged a marriage of convenience with the mysterious local doctor Augustine.
What she doesn’t know is that her new husband is involved in some nefarious activities that may have leanings to the supernatural.
This is very much a journey of discovery for Jane as she attempts to break down the walls between her and her new spouse plus solve the mystery of his home Lindridge Hall.
Starling knows the gothic genre well and adds a lot of the familiar motifs such as a gothic mansion, rainstorms and characters who may have ulterior motives.
Fans of gothic horror will lap this up.
