Christmas Bloody Christmas review

Prolific genre director Joe Begos is back, and he’s bringing a killer robotic Santa Claus with him.

Anyone who has seen the thoroughly enjoyable and bonkers VFW may have certain expectations going into Christmas Bloody Christmas, but while this is a minor curveball, it is still plenty of blood-soaked fun.

We follow Tori, a forthright, take-no-crap Record Store owner who becomes one of the targets of a malfunctioned robotic Santa, who begins slaying all who cross its path.

Begos once again employs a neon-soaked colour palette, which he has gravitated towards in Bliss and VFW, but his aim here is to create a kind of Christmas nightmare where no one is safe.

Riley Dandy steals the show as Tori, who despite initially coming across as a little annoying, rises up and becomes a final girl to remember in the wake of so much carnage.

Begos borrows from films like The Terminator but also employs traits from action horrors such as the Maniac Cop series. There are plenty of gory practical effects and fantastic stunt work going on here too.

The best thing to report is that Christmas Bloody Christmas also has franchise potential, I mean who doesn’t want more robotic killer Santa movies?

This film is sure to be a crowd-pleaser and added to plenty of annual holiday horror lists in the coming days.

Christmas Bloody Christmas is streaming on Shudder from 9 December.
