The Jessica Cabin review

Like the vampire sub-genre there has been so much done with ghosts you wondered if any originality is left.

For Daniel Montgomery’s comedy/drama with a tinge of horror The Jessica Cabin, they take the idea of spooks and make it more romantic and funny.

We follow a pair of ghosts trapped in the titular cabin, who become mildly obsessed with a new visitor and consider getting him to join their ranks.

In the lead role Chase Williamson, plays Nicky, in a role different to his previous films, such as the brutal Artik and John Dies at the End. Montgomery is the co-lead alongside Riley Rose Critchlow, who bounce off each other with some magnetic chemistry.

The Jessica Cabin questions, in a lighter tone to something like Interview With a Vampire, what it is like to be eternal but be trapped in a certain place or lifecycle.

There are some genuinely touching moments and some great laughs along with some dark comedy that takes craft to pull off.

At 72 minutes it is as lean as it can be, and feels like a complete journey. Clearly made with limited resources, The Jessica Cabin doesn’t waste its cast and will give you a little fuzzy feeling as the credits roll.

The Jessica Cabin screened as part of Soho Horror Film Festival 2022.
