We recently featured the Kickstarter campaign for the brand-new Christmas horror comic anthology Holiday Spirits 2 on the site.
Following this, we got the chance to quiz creator Jeremy Gagnon about the project and all things yuletide horror.
| You’ve just launched a crowdfunder for Holiday Spirits 2, what can you tell us about this new series of stories? We have a wide range of genres in this one. Some are spooky and gore while others are mind-twisting or even funny. We have a story about possessions, slashers, unexplained phenomena and serial killers. We also have stories based on Native American, Scandinavian and Hanukkah folk tales and legends. I’m super proud of this book! How did the writers of the stories get involved? The writers are asked to get their teams together and they are free to tell the story they wish to tell. They also help a lot with promoting the book. Although, my friend Travis Gibb, besides running the campaign for me, has a special task. He writes the opening story which runs all the way through the book and ties the short stories together. What do you think is so special about Christmas horror tales? Good question. I think it’s the contrast. The fact that Christmas time is all about joy, happiness and family, I think it’s interesting to just flip it around and see how dark it can be. How will Holiday Spirits 2 expand on the stories of the first volume? In the first volume, we met with a serial killer (The Krampus Killer) as he was on death row. He’s visited by the spirits of Christmases Past, Present and Future who tells him dark Holiday stories and how some people are still redeemable and some… simply aren’t. In the 2nd volume, We go back in time and see the trial of this Krampus Killer. In this one, it’s the Judge’s duty to try and teach something to this psychopath. Fun fact, that story was inspired by a scene in the Holiday classic Miracle on 34th Street. Which was your favourite to read? Adam Barnhardt wrote a story about a deer hunter named « Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen ». This song has always held a special place in my heart and the way he uses those lyrics to tell that dark and twisted tale was really interesting to me. Will the comic see a different range of illustration styles or is there one set format? As much as possible I try to have different creators in each book. I want to bring in as many people as possible to the party. I think that’s part of what keeps it fresh. The only team returning from volume 1 is the one doing the main story about our Krampus Killer. Do you think there is scope for more Holiday Spirits going forward? There are definitely possibilities for more. We are already talking with different creators about next year’s volume. I really want to make the next one even bigger! And there are also some spin-off ideas we have in mind to expand the concept furthermore. |
