It Came From The Closet: Queer Reflections on Horror by Joe Vallese review

With the recent release of the Queer for Fear documentary series, the timing of Joe Vallese’s It Came From the Closet couldn’t be better.

Here Vallese has pooled together a diverse range of queer voices to talk about different films and themes that can be read as queer within the genre.

With a mammoth 25 essays encompassed, to say this is comprehensive would be an understatement.

While it would be easy to focus on obvious films such as the Chucky series, Vallese allows our writers to explore a diverse range of films which only enriches the experience for readers.

We look at modern films such as Us, Hereditary and Jennifer’s Body but also dip into classics such as The Blob, Society and The Wolf Man. There is also room for more obscure titles such as Is That You?, The Leech Woman and Good Manners.

Although i have stated It Came From The Closet is comprehensive, it does feel like this could be a platform for multiple volumes and new, fresh voices to give queer readings to a wider variety of horror films.

An essential read for any cinephile.

It Came From The Closet is available now from The Feminist Press.
