When you open your film with an opening scrawl detailing an urban legend, you need to make good on your promises.
We are told about The Hum, first reported over five decades ago, and leaves its victims with unexplained physical ailments.
Our point of view is from a young girl who hears a strange noise in the night, as the rain pours down outside.
Hysteric has some incredible sound design and really visceral imagery once it shifts gear. The film operates with a sort of nightmare logic where incidents just happen with little connective tissue to glue them together.
The heart of Hysteric is in the relationship between our young sibling protagonists trying to escape an unknown evil – you can’t help but not root for them.
Hysteric goes to those dark places and is a better film for fulfilling its dark vision.
Hysteric screens as part of Soho Horror Film Festival 2022.
