It may seem like a no-brainer, but a movie set in Halloween superstore Spirit Halloween is now a reality.
As gateway horror goes you would feel this would be something quite special but it feels oddly bland and predictable.
We begin with Christopher Lloyd, who attempts to hound a woman and her family from his land and ends up getting cursed. Fast forward centuries and the spirit of Lloyd’s Alex Windsor is now trapped in a new Spirit Halloween store and he has just one night of the year where he can escape…
Much the same as the Goosebumps movie series, Spirit decides to give a group of pre-teens the leads, with Lloyd largely taking a backseat besides some voice work. While likeable enough, a lot of what they get to do feels largely telegraphed and there is never really any stakes.
The special effects are slightly ropey in parts but at a shade over 80 minutes its disposable, family-friendly fun – just don’t expect the remember it the next day.
A missed opportunity.
