Out of the blue yesterday (Halloween), we got the news that Bryan Fuller will be the showrunner on a new TV series Crystal Lake.
The show will be a prequel to the Friday the 13th mythos, with original writer Victor Miller on-board as an an executive producer.
Many will know Fuller’s name from his work on the incredible Hannibal series plus more recently him being announced as the person reviving Stephen King’s Christine for the big screen.
Given his credentials, Fuller is definitely a steady pair of hands and given he can effectively create his own mythology around Crystal Lake and the Voorhees family, this take has got a lot of people excited.
Because of the complicated legal situation, any property involving Miller’s original characters can’t feature adult Jason Voorhees or characters who feature in the many sequels.
Fuller will get full access to Mrs. Voorhees and her young deformed son Jason plus potentially long-lost husband Elias and even characters such as Steve Christy, who played a pivotal role at the camp in the original.
The cast of these types of roles plus new characters will be crucial, but given Fuller’s casting of Mads Mikkelsen in the titular Hannibal role, hopes have got to be high.
We have seen this template work to a certain degree with the very popular Bates Motel series, which largely served as a prequel to Psycho, albeit updated to the modern day.
Will Fuller’s Crystal Lake be a period piece or a modernised take? Only time will tell.
Here is the information shared with Variety yesterday –
Exact plot details are being kept under wraps, although it is described as an “expanded prequel.” The show will be written by Bryan Fuller, who is also the showrunner and an executive producer. Victor Miller, who penned the original film in the franchise, will also executive produce along with Marc Toberoff, Rob Barsamian, and A24. A24 will also serve as the studio behind the series.
