Independent UK horror director Daniel Mark Young returns with his brand new feature Into The Black Abyss: Deathstream.
Young’s film is ambitious and despite its low budget, it takes on various themes and largely succeeds.
We follow Zach, an online gamer who becomes part of a deadly when he decides to take on a brand new game which starts to bleed into his own life. Secrets are revealed and while you may think you know what’s coming, Black Abyss throws us ma y curveballs and goes to some weird and dark places.
Young taps into the paranoia of the home invasion sub-genre, echoing films such as The Strangers, with some great bomb under the table moments that will have audiences gripped.
Given our protagonist is a gamer, we also tap into the vanity of the modern online celebrity, with many quick to point out his flaws and ‘cancel’ him at every opportunity. Matt Squance carries a lot of the film as Zach, with a balanced performance that taps into the narcissism of online personalities plus the vulnerability that hides beneath.
At a brisk 82 minutes, Into The Black Abyss doesn’t outstay its welcome and certainly offers something different, ambitious and sinister to the indie horror scene.
You can catch an exclusive screening of Into the Black Abyss: Deathstream on YouTube from 8:30pm tonight.
