Admittedly, I am a bit behind with my reading of Riley Sager’s novels.
Having said this, I have really enjoyed his stories, Final Girls, Last Time I Lied and the very creepy Lock Every Door,
For Survive The Night, Sager takes a more simplistic approach, with a simple case of a boy and girl on a road trip and one of them may be a serial killer.
We follow Charlie, a film-obsessed teenager in need of a ride home from college, but in her desperation, is her mysterious driver not who he says he is.
Sager perfectly builds tension and sprinkles breadcrumbs as the plot unfolds making this a real page-turner.
Charlie is a complex character, with a tinge of survivor’s guilt following the mysterious death of her best friend. She is strong, yet vulnerable, plus her issues make her an unreliable narrator, making it more of a compelling read.
Set in the 1990s, Survive The Night is also refreshing as it eliminates extra means of communication such as mobile phones and social media, only increasing the tension.
If you haven’t discovered Riley Sager yet, Survive The Night is a great place to start.
