Bring It On: Cheer or Die review

Bring It On as a slasher movie? Why didn’t someone think of this sooner…

SyFy has taken a punt on reinventing the popular cheerleading series as a slasher with a devil mascot doing the slaying.

After a teenage cheerleader is killed during a tricky routine we fast forward 20 years, and a new group of cheerleaders believe that its a good idea to practice for the upcoming regionals in an abandoned school. What could go wrong?

Being made for TV, this slasher is quite tame in the gore stakes but succeeds on the camp scale. This is notoriously bitchy and plays more as a horror comedy than a straight-up slasher.

The height of this being a cheerleader getting away from a killer’s arrows using a cheerleader routine.

Cheer Or Die certainly had the potential to be something truly special but is probably held back by its Bring It On brand and the need (in theory) to please two audiences – the teen comedy fans and us slasher hounds.

There are hints this could carry on if it proves popular, and I would certainly be interested to see how the series progress beyond Cheer Or Die.

Bring It On: Cheer or Die is a slasher experiment that largely succeeds and will certainly entertain a selection of fans.

Bring It On: Cheer Or Die is available via SyFy.
