Malibu Horror Story brings the narrative around searching for ghosts in hidden places and takes it underground.
We follow two narrative strands, with one group of explorers who went missing in caves in Malibu under shady circumstances and the new reality TV crew who are looking to find them and the alleged spirits dwelling in the caves.
From the outset this has a true crime vibe to it, with plenty of news reports about the incident plus stacks of evidence being collated by the second crew as they prepare for their trip.
We get some exposition about a town legend, very much drawing comparison to The Blair Witch Project.
Malibu Horror Story has some really striking visuals and once the full plot of what is going on is revealed it doesn’t really let up. My only pet gripe is the over-reliance on one type of jump scare which is used to the point of exhaustion.
Similar to As Above So Below, it plays with the premise that once you are here there is no escape which heightens the tension considerably.
While you may have seen similar found footage films before, Malibu Horror Story does enough to stand out from the crowd.
Malibu Horror Story plays as part of Grimmfest 2022.
