Set in the mid-1990s, which is fast becoming a hotbed for genre cinema, Candy Land is one brutal affair.
At a rest stop a seemingly innocent girl is cast out from her devout Christian family and she finds solace with a group of ragtag hustlers, who’s income comes from selling their bodies to strangers.
Be warned, if you are uncomfortable with scenes of graphic violence and rape, Candy Land probably won’t be for you. This is the full, unfiltered view of this lifestyle.
We see a male prostitute beaten and graphically raped, and this is just a sidebar to overall plot, which sees bodies start piling up at the rest stop.
What we find is that the girl, although perceived innocent has a hidden bloodlust, which she acts upon in the most brutal ways.
Candy Land is a very odd and mean-spirited film, the like you probably won’t see much this year.
Was it all for her family? Is she part of a death cult or just plain crazy? I guess you will have to watch to find out.
Candy Land screened as part of Grimmfest 2022.
