Queer For Fear episodes 1 and 2 review

While it may feel like an age since the Queer Horror documentary was announced; Shudder has now delivered the Queer for Fear series, directed Bryan Fuller.

Throughout these first 2 episodes of the series, viewers will take a journey right back to the 1800s and go through the mechanisms and devices that allowed queer voices in the genre to have their say.

We look in depth at the lives and work of renowned artists such as Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker, James Whale and Mary Shelley.

The highlight of these opening episodes is definitely the focus on the work of Alfred Hitchcock. Whether it is Psycho, The Birds, Rope or Strangers on a Train; all of these films have queer elements in them. We also look at the life of Anthony Perkins, and get a first-hand perspective of him from his son Osgood Perkins.

Queer For Fear is also loaded with relevant commentary from people such as Don Mancini, Mark Gattiss, Karyn Kasuma, Elvira plus newer voices such as Scream 2022’s Jasmine Savoy Brown.

It would be quite obvious to state this is essential viewing but Queer For Fear is well-researched, informative and will certainly have you adding films to your watch list in no time.

Queer For Fear begins streaming on Shudder from 30 September.
