Cackle by Rachel Harrison review

In her latest novel author, Rachel Harrison tackles the fallout of thirty-something Annie as she moves to a new town to put her life back together following a break-up.

While some relationships end with fireworks, Annie’s simply fizzles out and leaves her searching for meaning.

Moving to a small town from Manhattan, she meets the mysterious Sophie, who seems to have a weird effect on everyone she encounters.

Obviously, there is some witchcraft at work, but barring the odd moment, her actions are fairly tame and controlled. More of a manipulative witch, than one who will turn you into a frog.

While serviceable enough, Cackle does have a rather leisurely pace which sadly makes it a fairly pedestrian read.

It does attempt to redeem during its finale, this feels like an afterthought as the reader may have checked out long before then.

Cackle by Rachel Harrison is available now from Titan Books.
