10/31 Part III review

The independent Halloween anthology series 10/31, created by genre stalwart Rocky Gray has returned for a third instalment.

While working across limited budgets, the previous two films have crafted some memorable segments on limited budgets.

Gray has recruited a number of talented filmmakers for this instalment including They Live Inside Us director Michael Ballif, Jacob Perrett (Spine Chiller) and Brad Twigg (Killer Campout) and we also have Zane Hershberger, who worked on the previous two anthologies. He has also contributed music for all the segments, with tinges of classic Carpenter in its synth heavy tracks.

Also, returning is Malvolia, the Queen of Screams to start proceedings, in a time honoured tradition from previous instalments.

Ballif kicks things off with House of the Mummy, which looks a couple who have recently broken up, and throws a supernatural mummy Halloween prop into the mix. Once again Ballif captures the essence of Halloween and offers something that becomes quite violent toward its conclusion. This segment also stars James Morris, who indie horror fans may recognise from various projects with Ballif including They Live Inside Us.

Perrett’s The Locksmith feels like its lifted out of the Giallo era of cinema, and while supremely gory, it also has a bit of tension throughout. The story is supposedly lifted from an urban legend regarding a child who was good at unpicking locks, but suffered a tragedy. Once again Perrett, following on from the no-budget Halloween horror Spine Chiller, shows a flair that makes him one to watch going forward.

Hack In The Box from Zane Hershberger is, well pretty insane, putting a killer spin on the jack in the box lore, with gory results.

Old Man Gross, from Brad Twigg is a warning to the wise, to leave your old mysterious neighbour alone.

Gray has shown once again he can pull together a great group of filmmakers to make another Halloween tradition for horror fans.

10/31 Part III is available now to Pre-order.
