With the recent news that indie Halloween anthology 10/31 will return for a third film; and Malvolia: The Queen of Screams will return once again to tell us more spooky season tales.
We caught up with Jennifer Nangle, Malvolia herself to tell us all about the project –
Given you had appeared in the first two films, was it a no brainer to have Malvolia return for 10/31 Part III?
Yes, kind of. I filmed the first time (I had to reshoot my segment a couple months ago), while Los Angeles was still lingering in the aftermath of Covid/Lockdown, so I definitely had time to film.
Were you given a flavour of what the film would be before recording your appearance?
No, I was just given my segments to film.
You worked on the film remotely, how difficult is this for an actor in terms of getting the tone right?
It really isn’t difficult. I follow direction very well. First time we filmed, I was in front of a green screen, but that didn’t end up working out. So, Rocky then had me film in front of my normal background. Malvolia is my character, so it’s easy to jump into her and allow her mannerisms to flow.
Have you had a chance to see 10/31 Part III yet, and if so what did you think of it?
I was sent a link before I was to film my segment again, but I never had the chance to watch it. I am a HUGE fan of James Morris and Michael Ballis, so I cannot wait to see what they created. Also, Zane Hershberger is so hard working and always makes quality work. Now that I think about it, I should dig out that link!
I would consider you one of the hardest-working actors in the independent horror scene, what have been your other recent highlights?
Wow! Thank you so much! That really means a lot. Every day I try to do one thing that will make my dreams come true and build on my career. Not many people will give you opportunities, so I make them myself. Being a horror hostess was never in the cards for me. Nor was filmmaking in general. I never set out to do it, it just kind of happened. So, I think being a part of the Mid-May Massacre Horror Host panel along with Svengooie, The Mummy and the Monkey, and Doctor Sarcofiguy, hosted by David Dastmalchian was a HUGE deal for me! Also winning the Independent Spirit Filmmaker Award from Zed Fest Film Festival back in 2019 for “Malvolia: the Queen of Screams Presents: A Halloween Special” was an amazing accomplishment. Most people just see me as an actress, but winning such achievements reminds me of how far I have come.
Is it good to have the Malvolia character you have crafted appear in work outside of The Queen of Screams series?
I think so. I’m able to reach a larger audience. When “10/31” first came out, people had no idea I was a real Horror Hostess, unlike other filmmakers who hire actresses to portray one.. It was fun to see people discover my show and delve into the seasons I had. I love collaborating! I love telling stories! I love playing a Malicious, devious Vixen! Always thankful to work with others!
What can you tell us about your upcoming anthology film Body Count?
While I love hosting and being a part of other filmmaker’s anthologies, I really felt it was time for my own. My YouTube channel has only gone so far. I feel like making this anthology with five original stories would open things up for a broader audience. The story is Malvolia is caught doing a terrible deed, so she is arrested. She tells the detective interviewing her that she will tell him anything he wants to know, as long as he listens to the 5 tales she wants to tell first. Will he learn from these tales? Or will bloody mayhem ensue?
We’ve shot one segment already and are shooting the second this month. I’m still fundraising to finish the film to pay for locations, SFX, meals, and costumes. You can support Body Count on GoFund Me – https://gofund.me/62781890
