Director Johannes Roberts talks V/H/S 99

V/H/S 99, the latest instalment in the popular V/H/S series hits Shudder on 20 October 2022.

Ahead of its release we caught up with director Johannes Roberts to talk about his segment Suicide Bid.

Can you tell us how you got involved in V/H/S 99?

I’ve known Brad for years and we were just chatting after the hammering I got on Resident Evil and he asked if I fancied doing a segment as what he called a pallet cleanser.

Were you a fan of the V/H/S series before signing on to this instalment?

Yeah loved it – I never get asked to do those movies – I’m never cool enough so I was very flattered to be asked.

What can you share about your segment Suicide Bid?

It is pure nightmare fuel. Your worst fears times 100. I think it will really be very unsettling to watch on a big screen. I can’t wait. It was pretty damn unsettling shooting it.

We have seen plenty of 80s nostalgia recently, will we see V/H/S leaning into 90s nostalgia?

Oh for sure. The whole thing feels like a mid 90’s movie from Dimension.

Have you seen the finished film, and if so, which of the other segments is your favourite?

There are other segments??? I mean surely it is just about mine. Actually, I only have seen Maggie’s which was great. But Tyler is a genius so I can’t wait for his. I hear it’s amazing. I hear they are all really good. Flying Lotus’ is supposed to be truly insane. They offered me to watch a rough assembly of the movie but I really want to sit and watch it on the big screen with an audience.

We recently heard that The Strangers series would be returning for a new trilogy, were you sad not to get the call to return?

Yeah I heard that. No, I’m happy to have just done Prey at Night. I actually really like that movie, it was a good experience. I’ll watch them for sure though.

I recently picked up your mini series When Evil Calls, what can you recall about working on this?

Haha sweet Jesus.  It was the world’s first and last series for cell phones (before smartphones) – it was an experiment – and then they put all the episodes together as a feature film – this is the last paragraph of the Dread Central review for the movie — What you’re reading here is probably going to be one of the shortest reviews I’ve ever written. Sure, I could sit here and rip When Evil Calls apart in all sorts of humorous ways, but honestly, I just can’t get by my overall disgust. The stench of ineptitude exuded by this one-note, shit-out, steaming, failure-pile of cinematic travesty is actually keeping my spite at bay. Anyone who’s read anything that I have written can attest that this is no small feat. In short — Fuck this movie. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m just gonna go and sit in the dark for a while.

I didn’t work for four years after that. That review will stay with me though.

Can you tell us what you are working on next?

After the reviews on Resident Evil? Wedding videos.

V/H/S 99 will be released on 20 October by Shudder.
