From the director of The Ruins, we have a new queer horror feature Swallowed.
We follow Ben, a porn star/dancer who is moving to LA, and his friend Dom who wants to give him a send-off he won’t forget plus some cash in his pocket.
Things go south when Dom decides to get the cash via a drug push. It starts to get even weirder when both are forced to swallow the drugs and we flip from a thriller to a slightly restrained version of body horror.
They end up at a remote cabin, where they also must deal with the head drug dealer, played by the returning Mark Patton (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2).
This is sadly where Swallowed runs out of steam and becomes more laborious when it felt like it was gonna fly into Cronenberg-esque body horror.
Swallowed would usually be something a bit more linear, but here it is unabashedly queer, its just a shame it never fully fulfils its potential.
Swallowed screened as part of Arrow Video Frightfest 2022.
