Powertool Cheerleaders vs The Boyband of the Screeching Dead (Frightfest) review

I think it’s fair to say that Powertool Cheerleaders vs The Boyband of the Screeching Dead will win the best title of a film from 2022.

This independent horror comedy and sometimes musical, does what the title suggests but also tries to combine all the elements, with mixed results.

Some of the jokes do land, but the songs feel oddly flat and don’t really stand out from the narrative in same way as something like Anna and the Apocalypse.

What I will say for the film though, is the practical effects here are a lot of fun, given their limited budget, the results are outstanding.

It would have been easy to slap a load of CGI in there, but Powertool Cheerleaders… resists and remains true to its indie roots.

The supernatural element of the plot is very disjointed and doesn’t really line up with the rest, whereas a lot scenes just kind of happen without the structure to weave a consistent narrative.

Powertool Cheerleaders… is a valiant effort at trying to do something different with zombies, but it won’t be for everyone.

Powertool Cheerleaders vs The Boyband of the Screeching Dead screens at Arrow Video Frightfest 2022.
