Cult of VHS (Frightfest 2022) review

While some physical media collector have moved onto Blu Ray’s and 4K versions of films, some of us just can’t let go of VHS.

This documentary explores some of the passionate collectors of cult and rare films on VHS and asks questions about why this medium remains popular for over 40 years.

Director Rob Preciado gives us what initially like a fanboy account of the medium, but quickly morphs into a heartfelt and detailed look at its audience.

We explore some of the classic artwork from artists such as Graham Humphreys plus the effect that the Video Nasty scandal had on VHS. Preciado has clearly done his research, as the whole Nasties scandal just boils plenty of horror fans’ blood given its sheer absurdity.

Many of the collectors show off their most prized possessions and tell some intriguing stories about them plus meeting other VHS enthusiasts.

While I simply haven’t the room to store VHS tapes, it would be a hobby I wouldn’t have undertaken long ago if my surroundings were more considerable.

Cult of VHS will have you wanting to fall in love with VHS all over again, and reminisce about those days of spending hours trying to choose a film to rent at your local video shop.

Cult of VHS screens at Arrow Video Frightfest 2022.
