It feels like filmmaker Alexis Bruchon is quickly becoming a master of minimalistic horror.
I was hugely impressed with Bruchon’s The Woman With Leopard Shoes, which screened at Grimmfest 2022, so expectations were reasonably higher for The Eyes Below.
Luckily, while a different kind of film, this is more of a waking nightmare that use our minds against us. We follow Eugene, a man who is haunted by a terrifying slender figure clad all in black, who he can’t seem to escape.
Is this just an overactive imagination or something far more sinister?
Bruchon manages to conjure up countless nightmarish sequences with some incredible cinematography plus a bombastic score which really elevates some sequences.
The other achievement of The Eyes Below is that it manages to be a near silent movie, with pretty much no dialogue but this never feels a detriment to the narrative.
Overall Bruchon carries on their fantastic start to feature films and has created another film that will have festival crowds in deep discussions as the lights come up.
The Eyes Below screens at Arrow Video Frightfest 2022.
