What ‘Clarice’ series means for Hannibal’s future

Earlier today it was reported on Deadline, that a pilot for a potential new sequel series to the Silence of the Lambs has been commissioned by CBS.

Produced by Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek) and Jenny Lumet (Star Trek: Discovery), ‘Clarice’ will focus on the character of Clarice Starling and follow her journey after the killing of serial killer Buffalo Bill at the end of the Jonathan Demme’s masterpiece.

This may be heartbreaking news for avid fans of NBC’s Hannibal, which was cancelled in 2015 after poor ratings for its third season.

That series ended quite ambiguously, with series creator Brian Fuller stating on numerous occasions how he would like to re-imagine the story of Lambs with casting such as Lee Pace as Buffalo Bill and potentially, Ellen Page as Clarice.

‘Clarice’ will instead looking at the convening years between Lambs and its 2001 follow-up Hannibal and focus on Starling it seems, with maybe the fleeting mention of the AWOL Lecter.

The suggestion from the brief synopsis is that ‘Clarice’, much in the same way as Lambs, will be a female empowerment story as she negotiates her way through the convoluted and male-dominated world of Government and politics.

Kurtzman and Lumet said of the project,

“After more than 20 years of silence, we’re privileged to give voice to one of America’s most enduring heroes – Clarice Starling.

“Clarice’s bravery and complexity have always lit the way, even as her personal story remained in the dark. But hers is the very story we need today: her struggle, her resilience, her victory. Her time is now, and always.”

What do you think about the ‘Clarice’ series on CBS? Let us know in the comments.

  1. If Hannibal is Mads I will be okay, I mean they could possibly cross-over he was Hannibal so this could work. but no Mads then I can’t see anyone else being Hannibal….sorry no dice if Mads is not Hannibal!

But in all honesty freaking pick up Hannibal seriously, they will do this and not even attempt to give Hannibal more seasons. like some big studio has to. figured showtime might of, or maybe Amazon sense they have the series now. just give us are awesome show back!! sorry for the rant….
