Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum Blu-Ray review

In recent years, because of the volume of horror films released on streaming sometimes a real gem gets lost in the mix.

Released in 2018, Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum probably fell into that category. Underseen outside of Amazon Prime, this engrossing and, for lack of a better phrase, haunting, found footage is top tier.

We follow a group of bloggers who visit the notoriously haunted asylum, and, as you can guess, things awry. There is a real patience to this film, as we get acquainted with our surroundings and get to know our team with the odd hint that something else is in their presence, before things really shifts gear.

This package from Second Sight Films is jam-packed with features, including a new commentary track from Terry Mesnard and Mary Beth McAndrews, from the Scarred For Life podcast. Mesnard has been a long advocate of Gonjiam, so it felt only fitting that he was part of this release.

Zoe Rose Smith (Zobo With a Shotgun) provides a featurette discussing the themes of Haunted Asylum, plus we some archival featurettes and an immersive 70-page booklet with three essays.

Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum needs more love, and this release will certainly help to get more eyes on this modern found footage classic.

Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum is available now on Blu-Ray and 4K from Second Sight Films.
